I was using my HP 15 ac-083TX laptop normally and since 3 days it has been freezing suddenly while watching vids or doing any normal tasks. Last night it froze and i had to shut it down by holding the power button but after powering it on is stuck now on a black screen after the windows logo. I ran the SMART status check it passed and Short DST test it failed. I have so much of my personal data and i dont want to lose them. It is still in warranty. What should I do to save my data and to fix this?

Hi there gavi7566,

That is really unpleasant. :(
In that case, you have a couple of options, as your system can't boot:
- Take the drive out and attach it to another system as a secondary drive. Then you can try to access the drive. You can attach it either externally through SATA to USB adapter or internally to a desktop computer with SATA & power cables.
- Use some data recovery tool for DOS mode. You can check the Ubuntu Live CD approach out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
Just boot from the flash drive, don't install Ubuntu.

After you recover the data, you can just contact the place you got it from and RMA it.

Cheers,

Well, you should either try some other data recovery tools for DOS mode, or attach the drive to another system and try some OS based one.
There are many threads on data recovery in the community. Check that one for example: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Keep in mind that if the data is extremely important, you may need to contact a data recovery company.
