Hello,

I posted the following on the video card board and was referred here. The reason was because I also asked if it's true that NVidia cards are superior to ATI for modelling. I've read things about the Cuda cores being specifically used by certain applications. I'm not sure what they are or how they work, but is 3d Studio Max one of those applications? Would a GTX 580 or 660 be vastly superior for use with Max, compared to the 7870?

Hello,

What I have:

Intel Core i5-3570K Processor
MSI Z77A-G41 Motherboard
700W Power Supply
Kingston HyperX Blu 16GB 1600MHz 240-pin DDR3 (2 8GB chips)

I would like to add a graphics card that will be good for both modelling and gaming. The modelling is just a hobby at the moment with the potential of becoming something more serious in the future. I definitely want something that is capable of performing well in the modelling environment, specifically with 3D Studio Max. I'd like to not spend more than $250 and have found many 7870's that fall into that range and seem to benchmark well. I guess the confusion for me is that the benchmarks are all about gaming and have nothing to do with modelling/rendering. I intend to overclock the CPU for certain and the GPU as well, if this is the model that I purchase. Is this a decent card for the task, or should I be looking at something else? The specific 7870 that I prefer is the PowerColor PCS+ AX7870 Vortex II edition.

update your drivers and 3D should be in the update.
