HDMI issues, new computer, issues!

I just bought a new computer, an HP Envy. We used a HDMI to connect to our old computer and assumed it would be just as easy to hook up the new one, not. so. much. When I plug in the cord, it shows what should be on my computer screen on the T.V screen but, when I look at my screen, it has my screen saver and I am confused. I am not a techy girl, kind of a dork, what am I missing? Can you help me??
I need simple directions.

What does it show? Is the screen black but the mouse will go over there if you move it?

The screen on the computer shows my screen saver, but will not show the mouse movement. The t.v. screen shows the screen I want example: daretv.com. It's like the tv screen is showing what I want but the computer screen is not. Very frustrated, I think I need to configure settings but I'm not sure how to do it.
