HDMI to VGA

I have a single cable, one end is HDMI and the other end is vga. My laptop has a HDMI output and my projector has a VGA input, can anyone tell me why it's not working? I tried it on 2 different laptops both dell and one is a new laptop.

You have to use an active VGA to HDMI adapter. Since VGA is analog and HDMI is digital.

If I had to guess, I'd assume it's one of these:

It states: this cable is not compatible with PS3/PS4/Xbox/PC/laptop...

Supposedly some companies out there briefly made hybrid HDMI devices that could output an analog signal, at least according to one reviewer. They all mention something about "digital signal output through VGA port function." And a max res of 1024 x 768. If they do exist, I'd assume it's some proprietary device with a frankenstein connector. Where'd you get the cable from?
