Solved! headphones picking up audio not mic

so i can't seem to find anything on this anywhere.
when i plug my headset (brand new) into the mic jack instead of the mic picking up my voice is the earphones.
if someone could explain whats going on and what i can do to fix this odd occurrence.
that would be great.

There should be two wires coming from your headpiece.
Seems like you plugged the headphone wire to the mic jack and the mic to the speaker jack.

in times of need, I've used headphones as microphones in the past.
