Headset, Speakers PC Question

I am thinking about getting a decent headset and pair of speakers for my PC.

But at present I only have the onboard HD Realtek, is there any point? and if not what sort of sound card should I look to get to make it worthwhile (as a minimum)?

no theres no point in getting a dedicated soundcard if ur not going to spend much on a audio system.
