I am in need of a new laptop for work. I will be using it several hours a day. Here is a list of what I will be doing with it:

-Several tabs open in a Web browser at a time
-Several applications open at once
-Occasional Netflix or video open
-I will not be gaming or doing anything that requires a lot of CPU/GPU power

I want to keep this laptop around $400, and definitely under $500. I would really like a 17 inch screen, but I'm not sure how much that jacks the price up. Any opinions on this?

Most lower middle to lower end laptops such as a Dell Insprion 17 5000 or a Lenovo Z710 will work beautifully fine and would last for a bit. Do check out other alternatives such as Toshiba, Acer, and Asus as well. Look for an i3(Would go for an i5 for multi tasking) and above and stay frosty from Intel Celerons, Pentiums or lower if you really want that edge for multitasking.

First look for a processor that runs about 2.0ghz or faster with a generous amount of l3 cache around 4mb.
A 6 gig ram or above helps if you run alot of stuff. I would stay away from 4 gigs.
