My puppy peed on my laptop while it was closed and go it on the top of the laptop. The screen started to go crazy and losing video. I hooked it up to an external monitor an that seems all fine as all the video shows up fine on the external monitor. The backlight on the screen is still on but the screen is still blank. Is the screen shot?

Solution

turn the laptop off ..water and power dont mix...take the keyboard and open it up and use a blow dryer on low..cold/marm to try and dry out the laptop..give the laptop a few days to dry..

If I had to guess based on info given, then I'd say that it's probably shot, but I can't guarantee that. Still, like smorizio said, you should keep it powered down with the battery and charger removed until it's dry. Give it a try after it's dry (you might also want to make sure there isn't any residue if you can).

Since you have powered on the laptop without cleaning it out first, there is a good chance that you have some corrosion. Power that thing down and don't power it on again until you have had it checked out and thoroughly cleaned up. Dog pee is not just water. There are many other compunds in it (including ammonia and salt) and some of those are corrosive even after it dries. There is a good chance that your display is permanaently damaged so don't expect too much.

Water is not conductive just saying. But urine is because its full of ions. You should have rinsed the laptop with alcohol or something and then allowed it to dry for a few days before turning it back on. But since you turned it on, its too late now.

Pee on the dogs food for revenge.

Water has to be very pure to not be conductive. IDK if even 100% pure water is totally non-conductive. Otherwise, stuff like dropping a toaster in a bath tub wouldn't kill someone taking a bath.

Water from the tap is not even close to pure water. They add chemicals to it.

Pure water is a very poor conductor.

Actually that isn't such a bad idea :pt1cable:

That's more of a myth more than anything...

USA outlets are something like 120V AC and toasters (as well as other heating appliances) pump a deadly amount of amperage. It is not a myth. I've read that bathroom outlets and kitchen sink outlets can have additional protection to prevent shock in water, but that's not present in most outlets, especially in older homes.

Distilled water is non conductive. But ANY little foreign object can transfer charge to it. That is why it isn't a smart idea to submerge PC's with it.. (Vet grade mineral oil is the best for that stuff). The US Navy tried it before, just pumped water out of the ocean and distilled it. Guess what happened to their PC's? Anyways I would've soaked it in rubbing alcohol of the highest grade then stuck it in rice and hope for the best. GOOD LUCK!

To be specific, distilled water is non-conductive.

Also, as mentioned already, the screen is shot since you continued to use the laptop. If you absolutely need that screen working you'll have to send it in to Dell/HP/whoever for repair.

I think that washing it out with very clean distilled water might be better (believe it or not).
The chemicals on the tounge are once again somewhat conductive (which is why it hurts so much when you touch voltage to your tounge)

Realistically I think the screen is shot. It had liquids in it and than powered on and damage was done. The ability to salvage the screen is probably over now. What I do is remove the screen from the laptop and just use it as a desktop now. Just remember to switch to external monitor when you power on.

i think I'll just replace the screen if it's shot. I'm going to give it another shot tonight after letting it dry some. The dog is a 10lb puppy still not much pee was on it and not even noticeable when i opened it up.
