Help me understand iCloud

I just "don't get" iCloud. Why would I want to use it - and why will it stop backing up my iPhone to my Windows PC?

Can anyone offer tips or advice on using it please?

Still doesn't really help me. I get all of those features by plugging it into the PC with the added bonus that it charges the phone too. I just don't 'get' iCloud...

I turned it on and a lot of my contacts and calendar entries are now duplicated. Grrrr.

It's not the same as the PC since the iCloud data automatically can be duplicated and sent over to any device you sign on to, and it's not stored locally on the computer, you don't need to be tied to your system for backups and data.
