Help with mic pickup

So, I know my mic works because if i go to the recording devices, and tap or talk into the mic, i can see the volume register bar moving. But any program in my pc (Skype, Audio recording software, etc...) will not pick this mic up. I have it plugged into frontmic on the panel, I used to have it on line in but now line in doesnt recognize the device.
