Hello,
The monitor on my daughter's laptop (Aspire 7736Z) is black. The power lights are on and it looks like it should be working. Any sugestions?

The laptop probably went in sleep mode and will take a restart to come back. You can change the settings to stop windows from going into sleep mode

Tried it. The screen is still black.

Is there anything displayed(it will be very dark and hard to see). The back light may have died.

Hold the laptop near a lamp or shine a flashlight on the screen.
Can you make out any images?

If yes, the LCD's LED backlight is bad.
If no, there maybe a more serious problem.

You should be able to hook up an external monitor and have it display what should be on the laptop screen if it's just a bad backlight or bad LCD screen.

There is nothing on the screen. I have an external monitor but will need to get an adaptor to hook it up to the laptop. I will try that. If that works, at least she will be able to use her computer.
