SAME PROBLEM with my LG 24" Smart TV. I did all the set up on the screen and then plugged in the white and red audio cable on back of set. Plugged the other end (mini stereo plug) into back of Auvio speaker. NO sound.

Without the model number of the TV I will guess that you have the speaker connected to an audio input not an analog audio output which is rare on TVs.
Use a headphone out if the TV has one.
If the TV has a digital audio out (optical is most common) you will need a DAC to convert it to analog. This is a fixed volume out so you would have to have a volume control on the Auvio speaker. The digital out has to be turned on and the internal TV speaker off to get it to work on many TVs.

Thanks for the info. The model is LG24LF4820BU.. I did purchase a digital optical cord that ends in a 3.5 mm (1/8th inch) stereo plug that will go into the back of the Audio speaker (it has a separate volume remote control, by the way). Shall I assume this will work? Also, I am curious as to why the audio out (red and white female) located on the back of the set do NOT push sound to the external speaker even though the graphic on the set clearly states it has been recognized by the set (a check mark next to a graphic of two stereo speakers!).
Will I have any issues using the new patch cord (digital optical to 3.5mm stereo plug)? MANY THANKS>

The manual for that TV is useless by the way. No pictures of the connections and no instructions other than to use HDMI for inputs. If there are analog audio outputs you have to go to the settings menu, then audio/sound and select the audio out you want from the sound out menu. Try that if there is an analog audio output.
To convert optical to analog you need an active device called a DAC not just a passive cable. Optical is light not an electrical connection.
If what you got is powered then you should be OK. You may need to set the audio output type of the TV to get the DAC to work.

Yes, I bought the digital optical cable with the 3/5mm end and did not work. I did purchase yesterday the DAC unit you recommended to another with same issue. Note: The back of my set clearly has an audio out (red and white RCA jacks). I have a cable the plugs into those and ends in a 3.5mm. DID NOT WORK. I have heard rumors that LG will only allow that to work with an LG external speaker. Lots of cussing out there because of that. Is this true? If not, like Obi-Wan Kenobi...this is my last hope! Wrist slashing will commence if not successful. Dr. Z

Oddly enough, the white version of this TVs seems to have a better manual, with the diagrams for the connections. From what I can tell, the only difference between the two TVs is the color. Looking at it, no, the only audio out is through an optical cable (as well as through HDMI1, I would think since is says "ARC" on it). I actually just bought two of these TVs (in black) the other day, they're coming tomorrow. Here's the link to the manuals for the white one:
