Can you do a quick check to make sure the Nvidia card is enabled and/or is being usd for your games (nvidia control panel).....I've seen some laptops not utilising the dedicated card where it should. The 630M wont get you high eye candy but it will be better than the HD 4000.

Both Fallout 3 and New Vegas are prone to crashing in Windows 7, especially with a quad core or higher(like with hyper threading like your i7 has).

I get crashes as well on both those games, there are various workarounds but nothing will fix it sadly, I've even installed Vista in a partition and downloaded Steam and New Vegas onto the new partition and it still crashed and I only have a quad core i5 in my machine. Sometimes it doesn't but usually after 2 hours of playing I'll crash sooner or later, I've even crashed in 30 minutes of launching before.

It's a poorly optimized game is all.

ah right thanks for that. i hope skyrim doesnt have the same problem then :). you said that should run on low for me shouldnt it? do you know how to make the 630m the primary? would that help for anything?

Right mouse click on an empty part of the desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel. Under 3D settings, select manage 3D settings. Check Program Settings tab then select from the drop-down list, one of your games - if it's not listed click on the 'Add' button to add it.

Someone else with a laptop utilising nvidia and HD gfx (optimus?) may better confirm this. I'm sure the nvidia card - in such a setup - has to 'see' each game in order to interact with it. If the games are already in it's list then they should be accelerated by the card (unless the card has been deactivated or the nvidia drivers are not installed)

I've never had to do that, and I don't update my drivers that often, but I am on a desktop. He could try this but I doubt it would help.

None of the Elder Scroll Series have I ever had a problem with it crashing randomly. And yes, you should be able to play it on low, maybe have to lower the resolution a bit down but I doubt it. My cousin with a GT 330m can run Skyrim on low with some mods but the resolution is 1366x768.

Now, you can try this, download MSI Afterburner and have it open and running while you launch a game, it should be turning on and have temperatures and core/shader clocks going from 0 or a low clock to a higher clock.
