Well, out of sheer curiosity I stopped by Best Buy (Brooklyn, NY) this morning to see if they had the big game on display with hundreds of copies, and instead there was nothing to be found. Not even pre-order boxes. I wandered over to the console games section to ask one of those slackers what was up, and he said that they have it in the back, but it's not going onto the floor until tomorrow (16 Nov.). Here's the funny thing:

He said that a few days ago, someone called from the corporate offices and said "why don't you go ahead and put it out a few days early"? So they did, and almost immediately they called back and said "pull it off the shelf or else we'll get a huge fine".

I'm wondering if that original phone call was actually a prank. You would think that after the Doom 3 accident they would be much more strict about the release dates.

Ok, I was totally out of the loop this morning- I thought that today (15 Nov.) was the release date. My bad. Unfortunately there are several problems that will deter me from playing it for a while.

a) I reserved my copy at an Electronics Boutique that is two hours away from where I live
b) I have no internet access at my sh*tty apartment, although I am moving next week :) and I'm going to open a DSL or cable account
c) I can't afford it right now. Have to wait for the check from Big Brother

There is a simple solution to one of those problems, however. All you have to do is PayPal me some money at questioningeyebrows@yahoo.com If everybody pitches in just a few bucks, it will solve the problem! Let's hear it for teamwork!!!

The best buy I used to work at has been selling it for 4 days, it was Meijer's around here that broke street date.

The street date laws are simple, whoever breaks it gets fined, but once its broken by a single store, its free game.

Not like it matters, they have to unlock it online anyway.

There are actually no laws against breaking street date. It's really just an agreement between the Publishers and the Retailers not to sell it. Some may have a formal contract, others will simply be penalized for selling early.

3 EB managers have been fired for selling the game early.

Damn straight they are. VU is just very insecure with their recent break-in and went this far, not realizing that they will do the very thing they were trying to prevent. People love a challenge.

Really guys online registration is not a better antipiracy protocol, just different which will stimulate those in the pirate world to create the hacks.

Several Best Buys and some other random retailers put Doom 3 out on the shelves around July 31, Aug 1. Remember how it was on the internet before it was officially released?
