Kurtis, you've complained about the X9 having a noisy picture, which
does not jibe with my experience. I'm wondering now, do you leave the HR
mode on or off by default?

I'm not Kurtis but I'll give you my input. I have an X9, tweaked by
Kurtis, connected to a Pioneer Elite HDTV. As far as general noise, I
don't find the player to have a noisy picture. However, while HR mode
does give a slightly sharper picture, I find that it does result in
increased noise in the image and if there is are any fast action
scenes it exhibits a "hatch" type pattern and smearing. For example,
the STar WArs LD are nearly unwatchable in HR because of all the fast
moving action, there are "hatch" type patterns all over, especially
seen in the laser blasts. The only thing I use HR for is lasers that
have mostly static or slow moving images. I think HR is made for Art
style laserdiscs with mostly still images. On the X9 the amount of 3D
processing cannot be adjusted in this mode and by viewing patterns on
Video essentials it appears that the 3D processing is at MAX when in
HR. The 3D level being at or near max isn't good for fast moving
action and this is what I think causes the issues I see on the Star
Wars LD. Since my X9 was tweaked by Kurtis, I use the other modes
and get almost as much sharpness as with HR but without the noise and
with the ability to adjust the 3D processing level to better suit the
program material. So I don't use HR much. I generally use Normal with
3D processing at 2 or 3 notches and with Star Wars or lasers with very
fast action I'll sometimes use C-Wide and up the 3D processing to just
below half.

When I say noisy picture with the X9 I am comparing it to my CLD-97 or
Philips CDV-488. It is the same as the 704/99/S9. Please take this fact
into account. Also I do not use HR mode since the 3D setting is fixed.

OK, thought I was onto something there. I guess not. Nevermind.
