home theatre doubt

i have a lot of movies on my hdd and they are all in 2 channel sound ,i would like to know if a home theatre system could play my movies in 5.1

It could not give you digital surround sound but would give you derived surround sound such as Dolby ProLogic. Not as good but better than stereo. You would just select the mode on the HT system.

the latest versions of Dolby Pro Logic are pretty good at upconverting surround sound from 2.0 sources. As @americanaudiophile mentioned, it will not be perfect, but it will work.

You should see if you can demo a receiver in your system to see what you think. Or at least bring in your media and have it played through the system at the shop.
