Hi all,
So I just purchased a LG Blu Ray Home theater system.
At the moment I am able to connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI cable so that I can watch movies, YouTube , music etc. through the TV from my laptop.
What I would like to know is, is it possible to still do this while receiving the sound through my home theater system speakers??
TV and HT receiver have HDMI inputs.
The only way I can see this working is if I purchase RCA cables to go from HT receiver to TV for sound and HDMI cable from laptop to TV for video??
Any help would be appreciated

Solution
it didn't work on my laptop as i tried it when i first moved to hawaii and my desktop wasn't here yet....but i know it works on my moms...so its a coin toss. i hope it does cause i know how hard you have worked to get this up and running (both of us for that matter)

yeas run the hdmi into your receiver and receiver to your tv....if your receiver doesn't accept hdmi then your out of luck as laptops usually don't have an optical audio out and the head phone jack likely won't work as the HDCP is a protected pathway...

Hi,
My HT receiver only has one HDMI slot, my tv has 4. Does this mean it won't work?

yeah thats actually not a true receiver...just a bluray home theater system...it does not allow for hdmi input. so no it won't work with your current setup. you can only plug hdmi into your tv then use an optical audio out on your tv to your bluray player...that should work but i can't promise since it is not a true receiver.

Oh right I think I understand.
So basically I need to run HDMI cable from laptop to TV for video then red and white cables from Blu ray player to TV for audio?
Would this work?

no....again you have to get the audio coming from the hdmi going into the tv...this is where the optical audio is needed. your tv has a optical audio out...which will send the audio only to the bluray....your player should let you select audio sources...just choose the optical as source so sound is played through bluray home theather.

Ok so forgive me for not understanding quite well
What do I need to buy in order to get laptop>TV>HT speakers

Update: so I basically learned that my tv has optical audio OUT but my Blu ray does not. Which leaves me to believe that if I get a optical audio to analog audio converter with the proper cables, that's the only way I will get sound from TV to Blu ray speakers right? But it will not be 5.1 surround?

However if the sound will not be true 5.1 using this converter, would it be the same sound quality to just connect TV to blue ray system via RCA cables rather than buying a optical cable, rca cable and splitter?

i re-read your bluray specs...i am sorry i swore i saw an optical audio in....my mistake.

yes if you use a converter or the simple a/v cables it will not be true 5.1 sound

i had the same issue on an old home theather set-up which is why i bought a regular reciever capable of hdmi in and out. (also has optical av etc)....

So rather than buying a more expensive digital audio splitter and required cables, I am better off buying the much cheaper rca cable as it will emit the same sound quality? Correct?

yep. sorry the anwser is a better one. it will at least give you faux 5.1 for now. when ur in the market for a new receiver make sure you get something computer friendly....one way to do so is check nvidia's site to find receivers compatible with 3dtv play (even if you don't use it)...that way you know signal lag won't be an issue (something common on poor quality receivers)

Ok so thanks for that, I got that out of the way,
My next question is, do I buy rca cables or rca to 3.5mm jack if I have laptop to TV via HDMI and want to recove the sound through Blu ray speakers?

looking at your tv again (sorry time change i have slept since we started)...i noticed the only audio out is optical...so yeah you will need the more expensive optical to av set up...i should have double checked when i woke up but i hadn't had my caffiene yet ;)

trying to use the laptops 3.5 jack won't work while an hdmi cabable is connected (or shouldn't as hdcp is a protected pathway)....though it may be worth checking with a set of head phones while hdmi is connected to TV...if that works you can use the 3.5 to av....if not its the nasty optical to av.

Great ill give the headphone jack a try.
But my tv also has rca audio jacks as well as optical.
Therefor shouldn't it be as simple as rca from TV to rca in Blu ray?

your rca is in only though on the users manual....not out. you need audio from tv to bluray (only tv audio out i saw was optical)....unless the headphone thing works then you can go laptop to bluray.

So I just tried the HDMI to TV and plugged in headphones to the jack of the TV. Sound came through on the headphones so I just went a bout a rca to headphone jack cable. However no sound will come through all I am getting is a sort of static, buzz noise.

Is there virtually any way that you can tell from my equipment where I can get sound from the TV to my Blu ray speakers?
I'm not fussed wether its digital or analogue sound or 5.1 or not.
I really just want the sound from TV through Blu ray speakers and not the tv.

with your current set-up and what we have already tried....no i am sorry. the last thing is the optical audio plus av adapter we talked about...and its not a guarantee fix though it is a likely fix as i have done it myself with desktops and the bad tv theater system i had prior to my Yamaha receiver.

Ok we'll that's kind of disappointing then. Thanks for all your help anyway.
I may just give the rca from TV to rca Blu ray a go. Because on the Inputs menu on my Blu ray player, it says I can use rca inputs or aux for external devices. It just makes you wonder why it has rca inputs in the back if they are virtually useless plugged into a TV. What other use could you have for them?
