Before Apple came with the idea "We know what's best for you", it was Sony with same mantra - they decided you don't need L/R balance knob on your stereo.

You could connect an L-Pad to the speaker you would like to play lower.

There are 4 and 8 ohm L-pads. You should match the speaker impedance but it will work so long as it's higher than the speakers. Just a bit less power.
