How do I activate a Sprint iPhone that I bought from a friend?

I bought a Sprint iPhone from a friend of mine that switched to T-Mobile. I currently am with Virgin Mobile, but I plan to switch. How would I activate the phone and select a plan? Would I need to get a new SIM card?

You will need a SIM card but you also need Virgin's permission to leave. Call them up and ask for a PUK - that's the code the new provider needs before it can let you on to their system. Unless you don't have a decent Virgin signal in your area, it might be easier to stick with them.

Is there any way to use the iPhone on Virgin's network? The whole reason I'm trying to switch is to use the phone.

Only if it's on Virgin now. Whoever it's tied to is the outfit to approach for the PUK and you can go anywhere.
