Well, the drive would never have had 32GB as 'accessible' to you. Much of that would have already been taken up by the OS and preinstalled software. Then there is all the things you installed, or saved on the computer, yourself.
You would need to have looked at how much space was available prior to the update to truly compare the two.
The only way to add more space would be to, 1. remove files off the drive and then run defrag, 2. update to a newer, larger, harddrive/HDD or SSD, or 3. use an external drive to add more space.
