Hi all,

OK my son has my first jornada that I passed along to him. He is fourteen.
Reality Check<yikes>..so he would like me to ask you experts how for one he
can take his CD music and turn it into a mp3 file and place it on his
jornada which now has a trial of pocket music on it burning a hole in his
pocket.

I am not sure about that stuff. He is young and I am well...a mother..a geek
mother ok...but still a mother if you know what I mean. so, we need
something easy for him to understand. Thanks in Advance.

He can create the mp3 using quintaessential player or musicmatch or any
software and pass it to the jornada using activesync

He can also use the desktop version of Windows Media Player to create
wmf files that can be played with the PPC's WMP.

Well, on the windows media player I see tht there are plugins that cost
moola for creating mp3 with window media player. Any free alternatives. I
would assume you need to have conversion software for this.

CDex(http://www.cdex.n3.net/) is free, uses the lame encoder and works
great. I've been using it for years and it's just a great program.

Or, couldn't he encode the files as WMA, and transfer them over?

WMP9 should do that easily.

Hi Eric,

Thanks. I did also download musicmatch and it seems to have worked but it
did seem a bit weird to figure out at first, but we muttled our way through
it. I am going to check your advice too. Sounds good and if it is simple all
the better.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't these files supposed to be smaller than
wmf? Isn't that supposed to be the attraction? Sorry, as you can tell I
haven't played with this before. my device is so old that an media bogs it
down, but my son has a clean device because he doesn't use anything so I
figured he could try this out.

The file sizes between mp3's and wma's at the same bitrate will be the same
size. The difference is in the sound. Wma's sound much better than mp3s at
lower bitrates < 96k. It depends on how critical you are of your music.
For getting music on the ppc, windows media does a great job as all you have
to do is sit the device on the cradle to sync, open wmp on the desktop and
tell it to transfer to your device or the storage card on your device. With
cdex you have to manually transfer the files over and I believe musicmatch
can move the files in the same way as windows media player.

Thanks Beverly. he did try that first which is very easy, but he became
fixated on mp3 for some reason. I don't know what the advantages are to be
honest. He got pocket music and he asked me how to get a mp3 on to his
device. He has some trouble because he is a special needs kiddo so he gets
very confused and frustrated so I am like you, I thought wmf is easier for
him. However, he is like a dog with a bone so I am trying to help him with
this. If anyone can tell me why mp3 is so popular it might help so I can
explain the differences to him. Thanks.

OK that helps a ton Eric. Thanks, this will help settle him down a bit too
because I think he thought mp3 was a smaller size. I think he is better off
moving the wmfs on the device and calling it done. It certainly will save
him space not to have pocket music on his device too. That Jornada is shaky
the way it is. I can't say the mp3 would sound that different on the
Jornada's tinny little speaker. I don't know maybe it does...will have to
compare.

He appears to know more about WMP than most ;-)

Personally, I don't use it for the more sinister reasons that are behind
the scenes... specifically DRM concerns.

Download iTunes.
goto www.apple.com/itunes and use that to create MP3 files. It is by far
the easiest software to use, and you can create unrestricted MP3s from a
CD at any quality you want. I reccomend 112kbs or 96kbs for a mobile device.

If you use the "get names" tool when converting music iTunes will place
music in an organised folder and name all the files accoridng to the
song title (in my documents > my music) so you can drag over an album at
a time to your device in Windows explorer.

You can then make playlists on the PocketPC.

I used to convert my music disc to wma at 64 khz bit rate, and the files are
smaller than mp3 at 128 khz (of course) and the sound with headphones is
good in my ipaq 2210 and pocket music.

Whats the trick? Ive tried that option in every conceivable way and all I
ever get is "Cannot convert protected files". You must be doing another
step somewhere along the lines as it's not nearly as easy as you make it out
to be.

The only way Ive found to use iTunes to make MP3/WMA is to burn the songs
onto a CD then rip em without DRM which effectively eliminates iTunes from
the loop.

Winamp can convert content to MP3 with a plugin from thw winamp site.

As far as I can tell, windows media player for PPC can play MP3s -
have I missed something ? I'd prefer to play most stuff on one player
than load several players into memory, leaves more room for music ;-)

On WM2003, Media Player appears to play any randomly chosen
MP3 quite nicely so far, for me.

Well, this seems to have been the conclusion my son has reached...He told me
this morning to take off pocket music so that is what we are going to do. He
has no storage device so he is very limited with space.

Hi Manuel,

We ended up using this route in the end with the WMP and it does make them
smaller which is very helpful. Sounds fine for my son. I dropped my new
Jornada this week and it smashed into a thousand pieces so my son now has my
32 mg compact flash. He should enjoy that with plenty of music space. Thanks

You might regret dumping MP3s if you decide that you need a dedicated MP3
player with Gb capacity.
I know I did.
