how do i get the video I recorded on my camera to transfer to my laptop?

Used a SDHC card to record video (old family films) then tried to load on my laptop to make copies for family. Video will not show up on laptop -- message says improper format. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Able to view video on camera.

If you have the actual video file residing on the laptop, download and install VLC:

Very universal video player. Should play just about anything.
