How do you hook up a HDTV to a direct TV box with only the antenna cord and component cord

I was given a HDTV but they said they weren't sure if it worked plus they only had the antenna and the component cords. Now I've not owned a HDTV yet so I'm smart TV stupid on how to even start to hook it up to see if it'll work.....HELP PLEASE

First things first...does it even turn on when plugged in?
Connect the anntena to the tv, position the antenna where it is likely to get the best signal.
Do you have the remote? Access the menu and scan for services/channels

What model is the tv?
What connections do the tv and box have? (You may need to buy an hdmi to connect those)

I can't even get the remote to work. All it does is turn it on and off,it won't switch input or source or the menu button nothing is coming up. Its a element

Have you put new batteries in the remote?

Edit: when it turns on, does it say "no signal"
What channel does it come on? (hdmi/av/digital etc)
