How do you keep track of software and keys?

At my new job, I'm trying to set up a system to keep track of software licenses, keys, MSDN licenses and eventually hardware (flash chips and embedded systems). I'm looking for something a little fancier than a Excel spreadsheet. I googled Asset Management and found a couple cool ones.

This one is super sexy but the free version is limited to 25 "nodes". Not sure exactly what a node is.

This one is completely free but I'm not sure it's exactly what I need.

I'm not administering the network or anything (we contract that out). I just want to keep track of the software/hardware we use.

Any suggestions?

A 'node' refers, generally, to one PC. To your network techs, it also refers to one network conection.

There are several good tools out there, but they are NOT cheap. If a small shop, just use an excel spreadsheet. Most companies have an SOE policy, and you don't want to fight that war.
