How do you make the connection with optical cables. They seem to be square

I just bought a JL 55" LCD (Made by LG) and a LG sound bar, and the optical cables are difficult to remove, needing a pair of pliers. This can't be right. How should I make, and break, the connections

Toslink optical cables have a connector that looks square with two corners chopped off. There is no electrical connection so the connector just holds the optical tube in place, Shouldn't be to tight. Try a different cable.
