Hey guys.

So I want to buy a home theatre system speaker setup. The speakers itself cost $500 and I need to buy an amp or receiver but I am just not sure reallly how much watt I need. If you could go through the product and tell me how many watt is needed I will really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Also, what type of chords would I also need?

The speakers are: https://www.audioaustralia.com.au/accusound-reference-6-6xd-150w-subwoofer-5-1-pack.html/

How much power you need depends on the size of the room and how far you sit from the front speakers. The specs show a max of 150 watts into 8 ohms. I would say that if you get anything from 60 watts to 150 you will be fine. More watts that you will never use doesn't make it sound better.
The speaker wire should be a minimum of 16ga. If you want to use something larger you only need it for the front three speakers.

Ok, so would you recommend a amplifier? And how many watt will I need if I don't want to hear myself yell?

Heh, that's what the volume control is for 😀

All joking aside, I'd say get an AVR that fits the features you'd like to have and the budget you're willing to send, plenty of manufactures to choose from: Denon/Marantz, Pioneer, Onkyo, Yamaha, Cambridge Audio, Anthem, Emotiva, NAD, etc. Budget (and availability) will be the most limiting factors.

Just make sure it's an AVR/HT receiver.

Just out of curiousity what is a AVR reciever different to the rest? And also I still want to know how much watt I would need to pump a lot of sound (Where I can't hear myself yell)

Receiver is sort of a generic term that refers to an integrated amp with a FM/AM tuner. An AVR (HT receiver is just another name it sometimes goes by) is a more specific type of receiver that handles video switching, but more importantly is generally accepted to handle multichannel content. I didn't want you to accidentally buy a stereo receiver and wonder how to connect the rest of your speakers up.

As for how much power, I think you'll find that anything over 50-60 watts/channel should be good. Your main speakers have a sensitivity of 89dB. That means if you play them at 1 watt, they will be playing at 89dB one meter from the speaker. For every +3dB if requires twice the power, for every meter further away it requires twice the power.

So say at 3 meters, it'll require 4 watts of power to play at 89dB. At 64 watts, you'll be playing at 101dB at three meters. But to get to 104dB it'll require 128 watts, and that's starting to get up there in price for AVR's,

Ok, I see so I have had a change of plan with the speakers and I think I will be going with a 2.1. The only question is should I still get a 5.1 receiver?

You should consider it, AVR's are mass produced so they tend to be lower in cost, plus it gives you the option to expand in the future. Most 7.1's will also give you the option of using one pair of rears as a second zone, if that's something you interested in having.

Nah not interested in anything like that. So I think I will go ahead with the 5.1 receiver with the 2.1 speakers.
