I currently have a inspiron 15 5000 series with 16 GB of ram, i7 processor (2.4 GHz), and an Intel HD graphics card. is it possible to put a relatively cheap graphics card in it that can be used for gaming? if not, is there a way to at least make my laptop better at gaming?

You cannot upgrade your laptop with a graphics card. Only specific models of gaming laptops ($1,300+) will give you such an option if they have a MXM port. MXM format graphic cards are not sold to the general public, ebay is basically the only place to get them and they are generally not inexpensive either.

You can't really do except to try lowering graphic settings. But that may not work depending on the game. However, it is possible to connect a desktop GPU to the laptop, but this only allows you to play games with an external monitor and this method is not compatible with all laptops.

The following video demonstrates how this work and you will need the following items:

1. EXP GDC Laptop External PCI-E Graphics Adapter

you have an integrated graphics card which means it is actually embedded into your CPU. most laptops don't have a dedicated GPU port therefore in order to change your graphics card you have to get an entirely new CPU. In most laptops(like yours) there really is no way to change that.
so basically you are stuck with what you have usually a RAM upgrade would help but with your 16GB you have plenty.
you can also upgrade your hard drive to an SSD but that's not cheap most of the time
