how to create a forum for free?

Hi there,
first of all sorry if this is the wrong section!
so I want to create a forum that I will be able to host myself for members of my work, were should I start with this?
I have goggled around but they are all hosted by the website themselves.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Sounds more like you want to start a blog. Check out Blogger. Pretty wide open what you can do.

phpBB is the sort of thing im looking for, is it fairly easy to set up and user friendly?

it is going to be a forum to share work and ideas but it cannot be hosted from another host, we have to run it off of our servers for security

phpBB was pretty simple to setup. I haven't used it in years so I'd imagine if anything, setup is probably easier. You can host it on any web server. I was hosting it on an Apache web server from out of my house. Online support for phpBB is also pretty good as it has a large community.
