Hey all,

I'm recently bought PC components to build a gaming PC. (They are on their way, so excited!)
Now my questions for you guys are...
What are some, from a software point of view, ways I can keep my PC running smoothly and fast?
What are some things I can do along the lines of disk defrag and so on?

Thanks in advance!
No haters.. Lol

Solution
These are very simple and effective programs which will help your computer run as smooth and error-free as possible.

1. CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download)
2. Smart Defrag (http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html)
3. Any good antivirus (Bitdefender, avast!, etc..)
4. Malwarebytes' Antimalware (https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/)

Note: When installing the first two programs, if the installer advertises any other program to include in the installation, choose "No" or uncheck all boxes. If you don't understand what I'm saying here, then just read everything shown on the window every time you click the Next button. A lot of people just click the Next button without knowing that other programs might install...

A lot of people just click the Next button without knowing that other programs might install aswell. When they keep doing this, eventually they will have a TON of useless software, thus slowing down their computer by a great degree.

Malwarebytes' Antimalware is an excellent program for getting rid of viruses and similar things off your computer. When you are installing, if you are asked to update the malware database, please do it. Afterwards, when asked to activate Malwarebytes' Premium, click or check NO. And uncheck whenever it says to run a real-time protection. The only software that should be doing real-time scans is the avast!, or other antivirus you have chosen.

The purpose of Malwarebytes' Antimalware is to do a full scan of your hard drive, preferably on safe mode, whenever your computer is acting slower than normal for unknown reasons. Recommended thing to do is to run a quick scan, and if you find a virus, do a full scan. Most of the times, this program fixes problems. If your problem is not fixed, you can just contact us on this forum and we'll help.

^^ This is just about what I would recommend. The only personal change I would make is to avoid Avast, as the independent research doesn't hold up to my standards. Bitdefender is perfectly fine for AV software, even though you don't have much in the way of user-friendly extras. I'd wait around and see if you can grab a license for cheap, though, if you want more features. If you're okay with paying for your AV software, you might want to consider Kaspersky or Webroot, before buying a license. Both of them are highly praised from the official reviews I've seen (not random people on a forum with no testing to back up their recommendations). Just throwing that in there.

OP- you shouldn't need anything more than this to keep your system relatively clean.
