Unless you had some program installed to have the device identify itself in some way, then this is not possible. You need to file a report with the local law enforcement agency, they will then be able to contact the cellular carrier, who might be able to tell if it's active on their network, and roughly where, passing that information onto law enforcement.

Just forget everything you've read about people who've found lost/stolen phones, or seen on TV/in movies. The reality is it's not that simple.
