How to fix the built in mouse on my Dell inspirion 3800 it does not move at all I have Windows xp

My mouse touchpad on my Dell inspirion 3800 quit working. I am unable to move it there for I'm not able to use it at all. On the screen it says my pc backup has encountererd a problem and needs to close. My keyboard is not working properly either but I have attached a external keyboard to it. Can you please please help me!!! I cannot afford to buy a new one let alone a used or refurbished one. My program is Windows xp.

You should be able to use an external USB mouse.
Check BIOS settings, on some laptops you can disable track-pad from BIOS.

You have more than just a mouse issue, you said keyboard is also not working. Open it and check the connections. If they look good, replace the keyboard and touchpad if they are different parts.
