How To Get 7.1 Surround Sound For Gaming

I am wondering what I need to get 7.1 surround sound for my gaming experience. Do get:

Stereo Headset+Motherboard or

Stereo Headset+Sound Card or

7.1 Surround Headset+Motherboard or

7.1 Surround Headset+Sound Card

Or what is the best way to get 7.1 surround sound? Thank you!

7.1 Surround headset should be enough to get it to work. Im also using one (Razer Kraken) and dont have any additional sound cards and my motherboard is also 3 or 4 years old. Works without any problems.
