So were trying to make a buisness website and we have to pay these guys big money to do it for us.(I came to late were almost a week from launch but) l want to make it next time and so i would like to see a online tutorial or something that would help me to code. Also any recommendations of what to do/not to do etc.

Its easier to find a template that's close then modify it. Easier than starting from scratch.

There's editors eg http://www.websitebuilderexpert.com/website-builder-software/

Depending upon the complexity of a website, sometimes you are better off using templates or prebuilt modules to bring things up. If you have a 100% custom coded website that is complex - it can really contain a lot of code - and that is why people charge big bucks to build them.....

W3Schools is a great place to start - I also have utilized the "SAMS teach yourself "XXXXXX" in 24 hours" books....they are really great for learning on your own - and they don't cost an arm and a leg.....
