how to manage data from computer?

So, I need to figure out how to manage where things are on my phone as I can no longer download apps sometimes because my phones storage is full even though I have enough room on my SD card and I have moved everything I can from my phone... So after plugging my phone into my laptop how can I manage where things are there? Like how can I tell whats on my phone and whats on my SD card?

They're in separate folders. Might depend on your phone/version of Android that you are running. For reference, on my S3 running CM11, the main directory is split into two sections: 'Internal storage' and 'SD card'. Should be pretty self-explanatory which one is which.
