I recently replaced the inverter after the LCD went black, it worked for a couple of weeks and went black again. It shows a faint image on the display, could it be the lcd cable or the backlight?

If you can see a faint image, it's probably the backlight.

To make sure, try holding a flashlight up to the screen. If you can see everything, it is definitely the backlight.

Check the cable first. If not at this point you should get a replacement screen or replace the laptop (ouch) if it it the backlight, since removing the backlight can damage the LCD panel, I would go to Ebay tos see if you can get a replacement screen with the backlight, invertor attached.
