I am in look for a smart slr camera to visit few cities of Europe and the photography would include of ice laden mountains , sea, rivers , cities etc. I have zeroed to Nikon D 5100 and at every site or shop, it's clear that it is Nikon D5100 SLR (Black) with AF-S 18-55mm VR Kit Lens. I am confused about the zoom power of the camera. Would I need to buy another lens for zoom or this lens would work for me. I don't want to put extra money since this camera is already expensive. Pls guide me about it's zoom capabilities.

If it works for you depends on how far you want to zoom and from how far away. That lens seems to be from 2006 though, is it a used one?

It's a new one. Actually I am confused that general digital cameras show that zoom is 30 or 35 x but slr cameras don,t show that.

If you want to get to higher zoom levels, need a larger than 55mm.

Before you make the plunge, read some reviews and take suggestions from the forum. Don't aim too low when choosing a camera. I've never heard anyone complaining that the camera they bought is too good.

Don't rule out used and refurbished cameras from dealers and manufacturers.
