Trying to get round the problem of my tv not having an optical out port to allow me to connect my sound bar

Does your TV has headphones jack? You could use that to connect to your soundbar.
If you are getting your TV thru a settop box (dish / cable), you could route signal from that box to the soundbar.

If you have an analog output (or the headphone out) then you can use a converter like this one

If you use a headphone out make sure that the volume is all the way down before you try it and bring it up slowly since you can overload the converter.
