I have an Sylvania home theater system 5 speakers and a sub-woofer it also has a DVD players...but no HDMI,just RCA If i am playing a DVD I get surround sound from the speakers,but if i am just watching TV my surround sound doesn't work. I'm I hooking it up wrong or what?

You will need to connect the audio output of your TV to the Sylvania HTS.
How to do that depends on what kinds of audio outputs your TV has and what audio inputs your HTS has you may need a converter to connect them. Most common audio output on TV is optical audio. If your HTS has that use it. If it has an analog aux input you would need an optical to analog converter.
