I was given a Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 with Vista, is there anyway I can upgrade to a better system?

You can try and upgrade any computer to a newer OS, however if the device isn't capable of handling the strain then you will have a hard time using it.

You need to check that laptops specs (specifications) against the requirements for the OS you are wanting to use. Anything at or below the requirements is going to have issues.
