Hello all,

I am purchasing a HP Envy 17t (I really dislike HP, but my university is paying the bill and they have a contract with HP).

The two configurations I'm stuck between are:

CPU: Intel i7-4900MQ
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory

and

CPU: Intel i7-4702MQ
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory

I will be doing moderate gaming on this computer (mostly PC exclusives/classics, I have a console). My primary usage will be for research (calculations in Mathematica/Matlab).

Will the i7-4900MQ help out with the speed of the calculations and is it worth losing the GT 750M?

If you know of another good HP computer that has better specs, please tell me. The most I can spend is $2300.

This is my first post, so sorry for any mistakes.

well if its for gaming, the 4702mq will be enough really. and even for calculations it will be more than enough.

the 750m is quite more powerfull than a 740m.

Unfortunately the product must come from the HP website (damnit!). That was an excellent find though!

No, not if there is another computer with better specs. I just chose the most expensive option for the Envy line (didn't get Leap Motion or Touchscreen because of battery drain). 15 inch laptop would be fine.

I read that the 840M is a bit worse than 750M (on notebookcheck.net). game-debate.com also claims that the 750M is better.

I would imagine it's the memory bus.

Well, like I said, HP isn't my favorite brand but I'm getting a free computer so I can't complain.

The 840 is BRAND new and I'm not sure if available yet.

look at these options for Alienware.

The 840M can be selected on the HP website.

That was fast for MSI since most are getting rid of the 700 series laptops they have. I'm sure everyone is manufacturing the machines with the new cards. Checking HP, Alienware and Asus they are still selling the gaming rigs with the 700 series. I did see MSI and they are selling all of their machines with the 800 series. I wonder if there is a delay in delivery date?
