Looking for troubleshooting guide to determine why it died and can I repair it. It shows no sign of charging even with a replacement adapter. It was my favorite laptop and I would like to resurrect it.

Having another look at the T60. With battery in, plugged into a good charger, charge light flashes amber slowly. Press power button and battery and AC light go away, will not come back on until I unplug charger and reattach it. With AC charger only attached, power light is on steady green, and when power button is pressed, power light goes away same as with both sources attached. Removed HDD, DVDR, Memory and no change. Tried static reset (ten presses at 1 sec/ then 30sec. No joy. Reluctant to buy a new battery due to cost. I have no other use for a T60 battery, have enough paper weights already. Any Ideas?

I finally broke down and went against my logic considering the symptoms and boutht a new battery. Note that the Thinkpad has sat untouched for about a week.
I plugged the new battery in and pushed the power button, and the T60 booted right up! I was convinced. So I shut down the laptop, got out the charger, and plugged it in, pushed the power button, and.... the old problem is returned. I speculated that sitting for a week with no battery, no charger, the residual charges within some circuit bled off naturally, allowing the boot-up on the battery alone. The charger I have is a new one, though made in China. A mystery wrapped up in an enigma? Thoughts? I know I must have another charger buried around in my "stuff" somewhere, maybe that's the right fix.

Well, being an aftermarket product (battery or charger) can cause issues. Those things are hit and miss. However the fact that it worked after not being used and being drained of power for a while makes me curious if it is not a more serious issue.

If it is under warranty, I would contact the manufacturer. Otherwise, unless you are tech savvy, you may want to contact a local tech and have them check out the motherboard for issues.

Not likely a warranty issue, this is an oldie but goodie... In for a penny, infor a pound; I ordered a new charger. I used to be a pretty good techie, but age has taken hold and now I'm just stubborn and broke... LOL. I have three other laptops, so the old T60 is just an old friend I hate to lose. I did notice something odd, however, the replacement charger I order is not AC grounded (2 wire), while the one I suspect as problematic is third wire grounded, green wire tied to AC neutral. Lotsa different AC systems around the world, not all will work everywhere the same. Looks like a Chinese generic made to fit anything... Will keep posting.
