how does an older yamaha htr 5930 (no hdmi) connect to LG tv for surround soound? no connecters on cable box (just converter box)..stumped

If it has optical audio out (which is most common) then your receivers' optical input is the best solution. Check that you TV will support surround output on the audio menu. If it has an analog (RCA or headphone) out you can use that but will not get digital surround sound.
If your TV doesn't have any audio outputs you would have to modify it to get analog audio out (will void your warranty).
