Colleague purchased an Averatec 3100P last year in the US. It's just
out of warranty and has developed an intermittent fault in that it will
not start - no fan, HD powering up, etc - the majority of the time, then
works first time the rest! I know that intermittent faults are a
nightmare, but any ideas would be gratefully received.

He has taken it to a laptop repair facility, who identified the problem
as an 'intermittent fault' - which was really useful! There doesn't
appear to be an Averatec facility in the UK and I have a feeling that
the repair costs in sending it back to the US would make a new laptop
the better option.

Any help or ideas would be great.

Well a simple process of elimination would put it down to the on/off
button or the cable from on/off button to the motherboard.

Intermittant faults are usually mechanical.

This can be cracks on the motherboard, or cracks on the solder joints
these are usually caused by the heating and cooling the laptop
experiences.

I would not worry about sending it back to the states here is a quote of
a bulletin board concerning averatec

"I bought an Averatec 3150H notebook in January. The first one had
defective battery and I returned it. The replacement had problems with
screen, I sent it in for repairs and it's now been in their repair shop
for over two months waiting for parts. Averatec product quality is
inferior and their service is non-existent. Don't waste your money on
this brand"

It is a very cheap notebook sold in non-computer stores and if it lasted
the 12 months then you had your money's worth. if it lasted the year it
could not have cost you £10 a week which in my opinion is a good value
for a notebook.
