I just got a new iPhone 4S and it doesn't seem to connect when I plug it in to my laptop. The laptop makes a noise like it recognizes that something connected to the USB port, but the iPhone does not show up in My Computer or iTunes. The iPhone does not seem to register that it's connected either.

iPhones/IOS don't show up in my computer anymore, there is no more USB mass storage device mode, but it should show in iTunes. Check the device manager and see if there is any unknown devices.

Yes, but shouldn't the iPhone charge when it's connected to the computer? Mine doesn't. And I tried 2 different cords so I don't think it's that.

Since the device is new it cannot be a problem with the docking port, it could possibly be a problem with your USB ports. See if you cannot connect to another computer.
