Which would have a better screen resolution and an overall better viewing experience?

They are very different devices, ones a smartphone and the other is just for gaming.

For a better viewing experience it would be the nvidia shield since it has a bigger screen.

That's not true about the Shield - it's a full Android tablet and runs everything that the Google Play store offers and has its' own store just for Shield level gaming. But that is true that it is catered to the gaming market.

AFAIK Tegra zone only high lighting tegra optimized games (there are others too that are not tegra exclusive) but if you want to buy the game it still directs you to google play store.
