Hi, I'm considering purchasing an Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 with an i5 and 8gb of ram (will most likely upgrade to 16 later on) for school work and video editing. I'm unsure if the 2gb nvidia 940mx included will be powerful enough for what i need it for and wanted to know if it is possible to connect an eGPU with a 4gb 1050ti.

No, you cannot use the eGPU case with the Acer laptop because the Acer laptop lacks a Thunderbolt 3 port.

In general, laptops with Thunderbolt 3 ports typically sell for over $1,000 and not all laptops that sell for over $1,000 will have a Thunderbolt 3 port. An example is the Asus laptop link above which sells for $1,150; it does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port.

Below is a link to a less expensive Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4 for $580. It has the exact same specs of the laptop you linked to. It can do video editing since lots of people use Macbooks for video editing and they only have dual core CPUs. But a quad core i5 would be better if you can afford it.

If you were willing to spend $700 for the Acer laptop, then you might as well bump that up to $712 to buy the following Dell Inspiron 15 7559 with a quad core i5-6300HQ and nVidia GTX 960m. It weighs about 5.8lbs which is due to the 74Whr battery and generally allows the laptop to have a 7 to 8 hour battery life with average daily usage. That means no games and no video encoding.

Hey bro , You're in luck! .. Check this guide out https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/5316-15-acer-aspire-5742g-gtx660ti2gbpsc-mpcie1-pe4c-12-win81-niskon/ This is a tutorial on how to setup a egpu (NOT USING THUNDERBOLT EGPU) I recommend purchasing this Egpu , Specifically made for old gen laptops 2008-2015 Also can be used on newer models/brands of laptops ., Heres the link for purchase https://www.amazon.com/XCSOURCE-External-Independent-Graphics-AC774/dp/B071RTC9HP/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1508845273&sr=8-4-fkmr0&keywords=egpu+laptop .. I suggest following the first link or watch youtube videos . My setup of Egpu (Running: Acer Aspire 5742g core i5 370m) was simple and did not need to follow any steps just plug connect cables and insert graphics card (Currently using : GTX 1050ti) .. So dont go spending Hundreds on a Thunderbolt or new pc when u can turn ur old one Into a beast ... Cheers

From your link:
-----------------------------
" There are some downsides of using the eGPU Setup with an Aspire 5742G. I'll list some of my established.

Need of removing wifi card
You need to plug the eGPU in after running the automated startup. Otherwise you'll running into reboot loop.
You are not able to go into sleep mode and wake up successfully (biggest downside for me)
You won't get the full graphics power as on an desktop computer"

Turning a laptop into a poorly performing desktop.
