Is it possible to use a 7.1 headset on a 5.1 sound card?

I want to upgrade my headset and buy a logitech G430 7.1 headset. But I have an asus xonar dgx 5.1 soundcard. Is it possible to use that headset in combination with that soundcard?

being a 7.1 headset means it can output 7.1 channel audio it doesnt mean it can only do 7.1 .. it will work on the 5.1 however it will be playing at 5.1 channel audio quality ..

Of course you can play 5.1 on it, you just dont hook up the side speaker cable. You will just hookup the front stereo, rear surround, center and sub.

Will you be using USB or 3.5? Keep in mind that the headset is a stereo one, and its virtual, meaning you have to use the USB dongle for the 7.1 which wont be taking advantage of you soundcard.
