Is it safe to download torrents without VPN?

Hello! I'm an end-user and I only download movies, games, apps and some other stuffs. I'm kinda worried that I'm doing the wrong thing of downloading torrents without VPN for me an average user. I'm frugal that I don't spend money on paid apps if I can have them by just torrenting. Pls. respect. Thanks!
