I have a Sony Vaio FW laptop that I've been using for about 2 years. Recently, the screen started failing and its usability has been very sporadic. The colors are messed up and patches of green dots are all over my screen, especially where the screen displays a dark color. If I leave it unused and shut down for a couple hours, the colors become normal but only for a few hours. If I move the laptop at all, the colors "break" again. Occasionally, smacking my laptop will fix it but the method is unreliable and I try to avoid doing so. I've hooked up an external monitor and it displays perfectly so I'm pretty sure that this is a monitor issue or perhaps the internal cable connecting the monitor to my laptop.

Can this problem be fixed by either myself or a Sony computer store?
The laptop was bought in America but I'm currently living in South Korea. Just in case that may change whether or not the Sony store can fix my laptop or not.

Solution
Use the video that jaguarskx provided a link to and see if you can mate/demate the connector a few times. It could be that the connection is not making good contact.
You can replace the screen if you are savy enough, but the screen must be compatible for your laptop. You just can't buy any replacement 14", 15.6" or whatever the size of your screen is.

This site sells LCD screens and has a couple of videos showing you how to replace your screen.

I'm not sure if the screen is what's actually broken though. The monitor works normally every once in a while. I think its more likely that the connection between the monitor and the body is unstable and it's getting knocked around as I carry it around.

Hook it up to an external monitor to verify that it is not the GPU. If it works fine then it may be the screen itself, a faulty connection, or a failing LCD inverter.

Well, maybe next time I'll read through his whole post.
