Hello,

So I was just browsing when I got a message popup on the screen quite clearly the work of a scam artist but I was just wondering how far it goes and if I need to do a system restore/reinstall.

So here it goes. The message pops up basically trying to scare me into paying this d**k head money. It lists my IP address, city, operating system etc which I know is just stuff every website can get so I'm not really all that worried, they didn't list anything to personal like name/address etc then it says everything's been locked and I will have to pay them I think it was £100/$100 via paysafe.

I of course just click cancel because I'm unable to close the browser and then I get a message pop up telling me I've been found guilty of crimes ranging from zoophilia to child pornography which is of course untrue and basically just lists a load of nonsense about how I will have to pay a fine etc.

I eventually manage to close the browser by Cntrl + Alt + Delete and ending the application from there.

Whilst it may have just been a dodgey advert that slipped through the net or maybe hacker has taken over the website etc I'm not entirely sure but I was just wondering how far it may go.

This could have been a java driveby for example and I'm wondering what the next step is. Do I just ignore this can carry on my day or do I play it safe and reinstall windows.

I did ignore them and I obviously didn't pay them. I tried using Control + W to close the page but that wouldn't work. I know that I've not really been convicted of anything I was just wondering if it was just a fail attempt at a ransom or if they might have installed something or if this was caused by something I downloaded.

It's a pretty reputable site in terms of security so a hack seems unlikely.
